Students push for television station
Prairie View A&M University students are working diligently on producing a student based channel, PV TV, which should broadcast during fall 2013.
Harambee Taymullah, who is one of the channel's producers, hopes the new network will encourage students to get more involved with the universities activities.
"I think students should play more of a major role in the content at this school," said Taymullah.
The channel has been in production for more than a year. The staff is working on filling the channel with enough programs that would fill a 24-hour broadcast.
"We want a lot of diverse programs to be spread out over the time slot," said producer and video technician Michael West.
Taymullah believes the process is going to take a while due to the outdated equipment, which is making the production process take longer.
After recording the shows the finished product must be approved by the department head and public relations office then taken to City Hall to be approved by the council, which can take weeks.
"This process is really dragging, we should be able to broadcast from this building to channel 55 the reason why we don't is beyond my knowledge," said Taymullah.
The programs that will be televised on the channel include: P.S. It's Sports, PV's version of SportsCenter, which will showcase the sporting events at the university with news segments and different sports subjects.
The Eye is an entertainment news program that uses Access Hollywood as a model and will delve into celebrity culture, national entertainment news, and the university projects.
PV TV will have a NiteLine show, PV Now, which is a daily campus news program specializing in breaking news and campus announcements.
Student Legal, similar to Law and Order, is a scripted drama that will have students acting out appeals to financial aid, academic probation, housing disasters and parking ticket violations.
Tiara's Kitchen will be a cooking show that will inform students on healthy cooking habits and demonstrate how to prepare budget friendly meals.
