Chic poetry showcase exposes student talent
The organization Club Chic hosted its second annual "Word Of Mouth" showcase on Tuesday.
The event called all artists from rappers to poets to express their talents to their fellow students. Club Chic's president Karris Gordon was very excited about hosting the event, the first of this school year.
"The reason that we are doing this is because we have a lot of talent on campus and we thought having an open mic would be kind of fun. It's something for everyone to engage in because in a lot of our things, our audiences are mostly women," Gordon said.
Prior to the occasion most artists were nervous and full of anxiety. One of the participants, singer Desirae Johnson, said that she was both nervous and excited.
"I'm very nervous because I've only done this a couple of times but this is definitely a step for me to get exposure," Johnson said.
Through overcoming nerves some realized that they had a true gift. This especially pertained to freshman Breah McClendlen, an artist who performed her material for the first time. Presenting her two short poems with an intensely nervous performance, she had the crowd in awe.
"I've been writing for a while and took advantage of the opportunity. I felt that in a smaller environment I would feel more comfortable," said McClendlen.
"The scenery of the affair was warm and comforting. It made you feel like you were in a poetic scene of Love Jones," said junior mass communication major Khaya Carter.
Poet RJ "England" Wright was the crowd's favorite. He blew the women away with his poetry about pleasing women and also inspired the men in the audience to take his advice on how to approach a woman.
Other artists such as Brandon Willis got comfortable by coming close to the crowd, removing his shoes, and singing about searching for happiness. He made the house laugh with his lyrics about sex, video games, and breakfast in bed.
Plenty of unplanned performances took the stage. Artists such as Amber Caraway felt encouraged to reveal their talents by singing. Caraway received many snaps for encores and Deondria Kyles who took the audience on a tour of her life through poetry that she came up with on site.
On the whole, Club Chic had a lively turnout with many talents. The club plans to have another open mic seminar later in the year.
"That was really an amazing turnout,"said senior biology major Candice Jones.
