Deltas promote breasts cancer awareness
The Eta Beta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. went pink Tuesday in support of breast cancer awareness month.
The sorority kicked off the month with the first event of the semester titled "Who Are You Fighting For?"
The ladies of the organization raised funds for the cause by creating shirts that were worn at the event. The shirts showed the names of survivors and loved ones who have died from breast cancer.
The event started with a formal introduction from the organization's president, senior biology major Kristen Wells-Lewis, who thanked everyone for attending the Deltas first seminar, which led into the introduction of speaker Carolyn Grant, an 11-year survivor of breast cancer.
Grant shared her personal survival story, breast cancer facts and the importance of not only women but young men having annual check-ups. She encouraged her audience to have self-examinations and to become aware of your body.
"Breast cancer is aggressively attacking the African American community which is more aggressive in African American women, I advise young women to do self-examination," said Grant.
The funds raised by the Deltas would support the work of Sisters Network, the only African American breast cancer survivorship organization in the United States. Grant encouraged young women at the event to share information with others, while also passing out brochures.
"It was a great and fun event that allowed me to learn that even though I support the fight against breast cancer for my loved ones, I don't do as much as I should in terms of doing more self-examinations and it's even more important to do the research on how to be more aware of my body and how to keep myself healthy," said senior mass communication major Celia Hinkson.
Followed by the keynote speaker the ladies and men had a chance to engage in many different activities such as Bra Pong, where participants had a chance to throw mini balls into bra cups.
"We want to start a movement on campus to get students involved and to encourage them to get their friends and family involved; we are the future," said Wells-Lewis.
