Panthers lose heart breaker to Delta Devils
After leading almost the entire game, the Prairie View A&M Panthers dropped a heartbreaker to Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, Miss.
The Panther defense got the scoring started when senior cornerback Ricky Simpson picked up a fumble and ran 60 yards for the touchdown in the first quarter.
The offense was not as fortunate as they had trouble putting together drives, punting three times and turning the ball over on an interception.
The defense continued to anchor the attack with a interception by linebacker Raheem Cardwell. The turnover led to a 32 yard field goal by Chris Barrick to push the Panthers ahead again 10-3.
The lead did not last long, as MVSU drove down the field on the following possession.
The Panther defense had its first letdown of the game on a crucial 4-and-1 when it was flagged for an offside penalty, which led to a touchdown.
That touchdown sparked the Panther offense. After a perfect passing series, wide receiver Spencer Nelson completed the drive with a seven-yard rushing touchdown.
After going into halftime with a 17-10 lead, the Panthers came back in the third and continued to dominate with their defense, allowing no points. The Panthers could not continue their domination as they allowed 12 points in the fourth quarter including a 10 yard rushing touchdown with 14 seconds left to seal the Delta Devil victory.
The Panthers will conclude the season Saturday, Nov. 17 against the western division leading Golden Lions of Arkansas Pine-Bluff on the road in Arkansas, Pine-Bluff.
