The Prairie View Lady Panther Soccer Team lost its first conference game against the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devilettes in Itta Bena Miss., giving them a 6-9 overall record for the season.
With 96 spectators in attendance the Lady Panthers pressed down on Mississippi Valley scoring the first goal 1:20 in the game. Senior Yosselyn Aguilar scored the first point with an assist from junior Angie Guillory to give Prairie View the first lead 1-0.
The Lady Panthers had a total of 11 shot attempts in the game, but two of the shots were off target. Seven of the 11 shot attempts were saved by the Devilettes goalie. The Devilettes had a total of 10 shot attempts throughout the entire game. Sophomore goalie Bianca Garza played all 90 minutes of the game with four saves.
Prairie View came in hot the second period of the game, and freshman Kara Ballard scored the second goal of the game increasing the Panthers' lead 2-0. The Panthers effort went down hill after the Devilettes made their first goal off of a penalty kick starting their comeback 2-1.
Prairie View struggled to keep their lead letting Mississippi Valley score a goal and tie the game 2-2. The Devilettes did not stop pressing forward on the Panthers blocking all shot attempts. Mississippi Valley got its first lead of the game with 80:05 on the clock getting past sophomore goalie Bianca Garza to bring the score up 2-3.
After the game, Junior Debbie Arguelles said "we were our own worst enemy, being up 2-0 and giving up all the goals in the second half is tough. We will definitely learn from this game and improve on the things we lacked. Preparing for the possibility in facing MVSU during the SWAC tournament it will not be the same game next time."
Bypassing the Panthers' effort the Devilettes increased their lead 2-4 by the 86th minute taking the "W" on their home field. The Lady Panthers continue to lead the western division of the SWAC conference and still stand and number one overall. Friday, the Lady Panthers face Texas Southern University in Tiger Country to maintain their number one position.
